Makaton Monday

What is Makaton?

Makaton is regularly used in mainstream schools, to support all children to develop communication, language and literacy skills.  It also supports inclusion, as children with and without language difficulties can communicate with each other, learn and play together more easily.   Makaton does not replace the spoken word but is used alongside the spoken word.

Why do we sign?
  • Signing helps the development of spoken language
  • Signing helps the child to pay attention to us
  • Signing makes us emphasise the key words of our message
  • Signing makes us slow down, giving the child more time to process what has been said
  • Signing gives a clear visual aid to what we are talking about
  • Signing enables children to be able to express their needs and wants through an alternative means whilst they are developing their skills in using the spoken word

Some basic rules
  • Always say the word as you make the sign
  • Make sure the child is watching
  • Allow time for a response
  • Use appropriate and body language
  • remember to sign key words
  • Praise any attempts at communication

What is Makaton Monday?

Each week on a Monday the children are introduced to a new sign or signs.   These will be shared with parents and carers via the website.  We have started with familiar key words and phrases that the staff and children use on a daily basis such as ‘good morning/afternoon, playtime, my turn, help, please and thank you’.    We hope that the children will share with you at home the signs they have been learning and that you will be able to practice these together as a family.
