At Brookland Infant and Nursery School we strive to help our children develop into articulate and imaginative communicators, who are well-equipped with the essential skills they need to foster an enthusiasm and a love of learning. Our English curriculum is key in achieving this goal.

We aim to ensure all of our children develop a genuine love of language through an exciting and engaging curriculum. Careful links are made across subjects to ensure that children’s English learning is relevant and meaningful: where possible linking our reading, writing and driver subjects for each topic. We ensure that our children develop an understanding of how widely English skills are used in everyday life. Our English curriculum intends to equip all children with a strong command of the spoken and written word, and fosters their love of reading for enjoyment and knowledge.

Through following the EYFS Statutory Framework and National Curriculum for English, we aim to ensure that all children:

  • Read easily, fluently and with good understanding
  • Develop the habit of reading widely and often, for both pleasure and information
  • Acquire a rich vocabulary
  • Write clearly for a range of purposes
  • Use discussion in order to learn
  • Are competent in the art of speaking and listening
