Reception Admission

Be Kind, Grow Together, Learn Forever

Starting Reception is the beginning of a wonderful adventure. At Brookland Infant and Nursery School, we want every child to feel happy, safe and valued, knowing they belong to a community where they can be themselves and thrive.

We provide children with exciting experiences that spark curiosity, inspire new interests and encourage them to explore the world around them. Every day is an opportunity to learn, develop friendships, build confidence and make special memories. We believe that a positive start in Reception is key to a successful educational journey. By nurturing every child’s individual needs and abilities, we create strong foundations for learning, helping every child to thrive and develop a lifelong love of learning.

Our motto, Be Kind, Grow Together, Learn Forever, is at the heart of school life. We encourage children to embrace new challenges, celebrate their individuality and develop a love of learning that will stay with them long after their time at Brookland Infant and Nursery School.

Our extra-curricular offer for Reception

Joining Reception

At Brookland Infant and Nursery School we understand that every child is different, and we want to make the transition into Reception as happy, positive and reassuring as possible. We take the time to get to know each child and their family, tailoring our admissions and settling-in arrangements to meet individual needs.

Our approach includes:

  • Welcome evening: An opportunity in June or July for families to meet the team, find out more about Reception and receive important information to help prepare for their child's start at school.

  • Come and play session: A special session in July for children to explore their new classroom, meet the Reception Team and begin to feel familiar with their new learning environment.

  • Home visit: In September, your child's class team will visit your child at home. This provides an opportunity to get to know your child in a familiar and comfortable setting and begin building a positive relationship before they start school.

  • Staggered start to Reception: To help children settle confidently, we introduce our Reception classes in three groups over a time period of 3 consecutive days. This allows children to become familiar with their classroom, teachers and new routines in a smaller group before everyone comes together for full-time school.

  • Settling-in arrangements tailored to your child's nursery experience: We recognise that children join Reception with different experiences of Nursery. Children who attended our 30-hour Nursery provision will start Reception full-time from day one, while children who attended our 15-hour provision will have one half-day settling-in session (until 1.30pm) before moving to full-time attendance the following day. Children who have not attended Brookland Nursery will begin with one half-day session (until 1.30pm) before moving to full-time attendance the following day. By introducing the children in three groups, all children will be attending full-time within the first four days.

  • Meet the Teacher evening: In September, parents are invited to an evening to meet their child's teacher, learn more about daily life in Reception and find out about the curriculum, routines and exciting learning opportunities ahead.

  • Parent coffee morning: We also invite parents to a relaxed coffee morning in September, giving families the opportunity to meet other parents in their child's class, make connections and begin building friendships. This is a lovely way to get to know other families and perhaps arrange playdates outside of school.

  • Extended transition where needed: We understand that some children may need additional time or support to feel comfortable in their new surroundings. We work closely with families to consider individual needs and help make the transition as smooth and positive as possible.

  • Partnership with families: We value strong relationships with parents and carers and encourage open communication throughout the transition period. Working together helps us understand each child and provide the support they need to thrive.

Our priority is to help every child feel welcomed, secure and excited about their new adventure at Brookland Infant and Nursery School. By working closely with families and taking the time to understand each child, we aim to build the strong foundations for a happy and successful start to school.
